Say “NO” to the Straw

Say “NO” to the StrawOn May 25, 2018, Camel Dive Club & Hotel, Sharm el Sheikh, announced all outlets are plastic straw FREE!

Camel Dive Club & Hotel has been pioneering eco-friendly ideas in Sharm el Sheikh for a number of years thanks to our owner, Mr. Hesham Gabr who cares greatly about environmental issues in the local area.

This revolutionary move was driven by the amount of non-biodegradable plastic straws that were found during our regular underwater clean ups and caused research to begin into reducing plastic straw use at all Camel Dive Club & Hotel Food & Beverage outlets (Camel Bar, Pomodoro restaurants and Vanilla Café). During this deep research, we realized that our food and beverage outlets had used 32,150 plastic straws in 2017. In the words of owner Mr Gabr, “This has to stop”.

The fact that there are no reusable or biodegradable straw suppliers in Egypt limited us in our choice of alternative. Our final decision was to ban straws for 80% of our drinks AND only provide stainless steel straws for drinks that maybe tricky to drink without a straw (for example a milkshakes or certain cocktails) or to guests specifically requesting a straw.

To celebrate this innovative outcome of reusable straws in Sharm el Sheikh and Egypt as a whole, we hosted an event at Camel Bar on World Oceans Day, June 8, 2018.

During the day, Camel boats successfully completed a Dive against Debris, in which over 30 staff and guests from the UK, the USA, Germany, Italy, Switzerland, Holland, Russia and of course Egypt, collected over 22 kg of debris in only one hour underwater at two different dive sites in Sharm el Sheikh. Resident 12 year old Luca Hales, who was recently nominated PADI Ambassadiver took part in the events, boosting the importance of young generations and the responsibility of the diving industry to set a good example when it comes to protecting the environment.

In the evening of the same day, during our weekly Divers’ Night at Camel Bar, residents and guests enjoyed a fundraising Quiz in aid of Project AWARE. The Quiz included rounds with general knowledge based questions about plastic, the Ocean and Egypt. Camel Bar served FREE PEANUTS with every drink, a FREE Finger food buffet as well as Happy Hour. All this combined with dancing and some excellent singing on Karaoke went on well into a tremendous night.

It was a lot of fun as a community and was great to see so many different dive centers there, with over 70 people joining in total. All united in their support of a plastic free world and future.

Camel Dive Club awarded 2015 PADI Green Star

Camel Dive Club awarded 2015 PADI Green StarThe Camel team is excited to announce that we have received the PADI Green Star Award. This Award is granted to us for the 5th consecutive time for our commitment to conservation initiatives and our efforts to reduce the environmental impact of our daily operations at Camel Hotel and restaurants, at our dive centres and on our dive boats.
Special mention must be made of our Camel Tribe boat which is the first daily boat of its kind in Sharm el Sheikh to have all the onboard electronics powered by a solar powered generation system. This is supplemented by an additional alternator from one of the engines. The boat’s septic tank means that effluents will not be pumped into the water whilst on a mooring and there is also an energy-efficient fresh air inlet system, designed to keep the lower saloon cool.
Being divers, we know that the protection of the underwater world is paramount to the future of the Red Sea and the World Ocean in general. Our team keep on working towards taking proactive action to ensure that our oceans stay as pristine and beautiful. Thank you to PADI organisation for recognizing that. With the help of this “star” divers all over the world can check the environmental policies of the operators they're choosing and opt for environmental awareness.
At Camel, our eco achievements both below and above water wouldn't be possible without the enthusiastic support of our guests and instructors – THANK YOU. We want to say thank you also to the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society who is regularly organising the clean ups around Sharm, in which we are honoured to take part. We hope that more and more divers, diving organisations and clubs will think “green” and cooperate to reduce their environmental footprint. Let’s protect what we love.
