Fewer tourists in Sharm, more underwater encounters

Sharm's unique attractions - which of course include a fantastic climate and some of the world’s best diving - are ever popular, but Sharm is still receiving significantly fewer visitors now than in previous years. What does this mean for us, as divers? The opportunity to enjoy spectacular and uncrowded underwater encounters, more than ever! During the past month, our divers swam with dolphins in Ras Mohammed National Park; two resident turtles delighted our student divers in Naama Bay; we’ve spotted several giant mantas, and our photographers are enthusing about the baby frogfish, rare nudibranchs and other small-but-incredible creatures we’ve seen lately. We expect tourism to return to normal levels from Autumn 2012, so make the most of our unexpected low season by visiting us while you can! Check out our special offers, and don’t forget to visit our Facebook page for our latest sightings updates.

Shout in support of sharks

Help us highlight the plight of sharks! Throughout April, marine conservation charity Project AWARE has highlighted the need to give shark populations the protection they deserve. Sharks play a vital role in maintaining healthy and abundant oceans, by keeping ecosystems balanced. Yet sharks are vulnerable, since they grow and reproduce slowly; nearly one in five sharks worldwide is classified as threatened with extinction. This week our divers and staff joined in the Big Shark Shout Out with an awareness-raising pub quiz in Camel Bar. Visit the Project AWARE website for more info on how you can get involved by signing the petition or entering the I Heart Sharks photo contest.

LIDS news and competition winners

We loved catching up with Camel divers old and new at the London International Dive Show (LIDS) last month. Thanks to all who passed by, especially those who helped on our stand - you know who you are! Our expanded prize draw in partnership with Mares ensured a steady flow of visitors to the Red Sea Zone. Better luck next time to those who didn’t win, and congratulations to the lucky winners: Alex Cresswell won a holiday at Camel; Alan Hunt won a Mares Prestige 12S regulator; Annelise Buesnel won a Mares Puck Wrist computer; and Lesley Steward, Andrew Damant, Lucy Stafford, Philip Scappaticci and Lynda Flynn all won Camel Tribe goodies.
