Celebrating World Ocean Day 2009

Celebrating World Ocean Day 2009Thanks to everyone who participated in our cleanups for World Ocean Day on 8th June. We offered all guests at all our dive centres their third dive of the day free of charge, in exchange for collecting any rubbish they found underwater. Our team at Royal Grand Sharm also joined hotel staff in a clean-up of our house reef and surrounding beach. Those helping underwater had their efforts rewarded by a manta ray sighting. Overall, we were encouraged to find very little rubbish underwater: this is a positive sign that divers are collecting any rubbish they find during their regular dives.

Peter Collings presents Red Sea wrecks

Peter Collings presents Red Sea wrecksAs part of our celebrations for ‘World Ocean Day’ on 8th June, we hosted a talk by Peter Collings, the Red Sea wreck explorer and author. Peter spoke to staff and guests in Camel Bar about his wreck diving experiences in the Red Sea. Listeners were treated to tales of the Yolanda, Rosalie Moller and Thistlegorm wrecks. Peter also exploded some Red Sea myths, including the ‘Russian Spy Shipwreck’ rumour that circulates among wreck enthusiasts. He generously donated copies of his books to prize draw. The money raised will be donated to Project AWARE.

Manta rays, whale sharks, and more

Manta rays, whale sharks, and moreAfter last year’s exceptional number of whale shark sightings, this summer has started with even more promise. Our divers and guides are reporting nearly daily sightings of eagle rays, manta rays, and whale sharks. These large plankton-feeders are being seen most frequently at local sites like Tower and Amphoras along the Sharm El Sheikh coast. This is great news for students doing course dives, which take place mainly at local sites. Camel instructor Cath was with one group of PADI Advanced Open Water students, when they saw a four metre whale shark: “We were ascending close to the mooring line, having completed the Underwater Navigation dive. I wondered why one of my students was pulling my fins. Then I realised he was pointing at a whale shark!”
