Who teaches the IDC at Camel?
Camel’s two PADI Course Directors, Paul Toomer and Martin Baker, are responsible for making sure you receive the very best professional education during your IDC, while having fun of course!

PADI Course Director Paul Toomer PADI Course Director Martin BakerAll our IDCs are taught by either Paul or Martin. Both Paul and Martin have achieved coveted Platinum Course Director status two years in a row. This means that they certified more than 100 Instructor-level candidates each year. It puts them in an elite group of fewer than 100 PADI Course Directors worldwide. They are also part of an even smaller group of Course Directors who are DSAT Tec Trimix Instructor Trainers.

Paul and Martin’s track record is demonstrated by the high number of instructors in Sharm el Sheikh and worldwide, who were trained by them (ask around!). By doing the IDC with Camel, YOU benefit directly from our Course Directors’ vast experience and knowledge. Paul and Martin prepare you thoroughly to work as an Instructor, and to pass the IE.

PADI Staff Instructors, who are experienced members of Camel’s dive staff, assist with our IDCs. They can help, for example, if you need extra practice to master a particular skill. They may also assist if English is your second language (contact us on idc@cameldive.com for details).
How long is the IDC?
The PADI IDC including full MSDT Upgrade takes 10 days, plus 2 days for the PADI Instructor Examinations (IE). The first 8 days of the IDC cover the Open Water Scuba Instructor (OWSI) part of the course. You then take the IE on days 9 to 10. After completing the IE, the MSDT Upgrade takes 2 more days. Emergency First Response can be added during the final two days on request.
Days 1 to 3 PADI Assistant Instructor Course
Days 4 to 8 Continuation of PADI Open Water Scuba Instructor Course
Days 9 to 10 PADI Instructor Examinations
Days 11 to 12 Upgrade to PADI Master Scuba Diver Trainer
What happens during my IDC?
PADI IDC Staff and candidatesThe IDC covers knowledge development, confined water and open water sessions. Each section includes presentations by your Course Director/Staff Instructors, workshop discussions, and presentations by you, to practice and apply what you learn. Be prepared for some Oscar-winning performances by Camel’s Staff Instructors, as they play the role of student divers of very limited diving ability, during some of the presentations!

A day of the IDC typically runs from approximately 09:00 to 18:00, with a break for lunch. It can include a mixture of water based and classroom activities. The day usually ends with a relaxing drink and sheesha in the chill-out zone by the diving centre. During some evenings you will need to prepare material for the following day, for example knowledge development presentations.
What is the PADI Instructor Examination?
PADI IDC candidatesAfter completing the Open Water Scuba Instructor section during the first 8 days of your IDC, you must pass the PADI Instructor Examinations (IE) to qualify as an Instructor. The IE takes place in Na’ama Bay, over 2 days. Our IDCs lead in directly to the IE.

The IE is assessed by visiting PADI Instructor Examiners. By the time you reach the IE, you will have covered in your IDC all you need to know to pass with confidence. And after it’s all over, you will probably meet your examiners again in the Camel Bar at the IE party!
What is the Master Scuba Diver Trainer Upgrade?
A Master Scuba Diver Trainer (MSDT) is a PADI Instructor who has at least 5 Specialty Instructor ratings, and who has issued at least 25 diving certifications. Upgrading to MSDT means you can teach a wider range of courses. It will help you find work, and ensure that you reach the required 25 certifications even more quickly.

When you take your IDC at Camel, we include FREE OF CHARGE the 5 Specialty Instructor ratings needed to upgrade to MSDT. One of the 5 Instructor Specialties will be Enriched Air/Nitrox Specialty Instructor. Please contact us on idc@cameldive.com if you are not already an Enriched Air/Nitrox user. The MSDT covers the final 2 days after the IE, back at Camel Dive Club.
How do I qualify to join an IDC/IE?
IDC briefing on boatTo join an IDC, you must have:
- a PADI Divemaster, Assistant Instructor qualification with current membership of PADI, or an equivalent leadership level certification with another training organization
- Proof of 60 logged dives
- Medical clearance of fitness to dive, signed by a doctor within the past 12 months
- Proof of first aid/cardio-pulmonary resuscitation training within the last 24 months

- minimum age 18

To join an IE, in addition to the above you must have proof of a minimum of 100 logged dives, and have successfully completed the IDC.
What student materials do I need?
To prepare properly for your IDC, it is important that you buy all required materials before starting the course. You will need approximately 2 full days to prepare for your IDC using the materials. Contact us on idc@cameldive.com for information about our special IDC Candidate Materials packages.
What if I don’t have enough time/money to do the IDC right now?
If this applies to you, why not start with the PADI Assistant Instructor (AI) course? You can become an AI by attending days 1 to 4 of the IDC. As an AI, you can teach Specialties including Peak Performance Buoyancy Specialty (under indirect supervision), and Project A.W.A.R.E Specialty.
What if I am already a PADI Assistant Instructor?
You can upgrade to PADI OWSI by completing the last 5 days of an IDC and the IE (2 days). You may upgrade further to MSDT by completing an additional 2 days after the IE with your Course Director.
