Desert Clean-Up

Desert Clean-UpOn 17 April our instructors Cath and Julz, plus guests Chloe Hughes, Nick Pinnock and Spiderman joined a desert clean-up organized by local group Clean Sharm. They joined almost 150 residents, guests and staff from local hotels and dive centres who had volunteered for the event. The clean-up took place in the desert behind the Rowayset district of Sharm El Sheikh. Collecting rubbish is important in this area, since it lies between the mountains and the sandy plain leading to Naama Bay, so rubbish is easily blown into the sea by desert winds. Well done to everyone who particpated. Thanks to Chloe for this picture.

Giant Mantas in Sharm El Sheikh

Giant Mantas in Sharm El SheikhSince early April our luckiest divers have reported seeing Giant Manta Rays (Manta birostris) several times per week along the coast of Sharm El Sheikh. Giant Manta Rays are distinguished from Reef Mantas by a lump behind their tail fin, and the location of their belly markings. The Giant Mantas have been spotted mainly in the Gardens, but also in Ras Mohammed National Park. In nearly all cases, our divers have seen them either at, or very close to, the surface. They seem to be feeding on the many (non-stinging) jellyfish which appear every Spring. Cath, who witnessed three Giant Mantas feeding on jellyfish at Fiddle Garden, likened this activity to ‘scooping up Jelly Baby sweets’! Thanks to Chloe Hughes for this picture. For more info about Mantas see the Marine Megafauna website.

Three awards for our achievements in 2009

Three awards for our achievements in 2009During March we received no fewer than three awards recognizing our achievements in 2009. Terry Johnson, area manager for PADI International, awarded us for outstanding achievements in diver training. Receiving the award, Miki, manager at Camel in Naama Bay, attributed our success to the hard work and friendliness of our entire dive team. We were also the only dive centre in Egypt to be recognized in 2009 by a Project AWARE Environmental Achievement Award. Finally, we won third place in UK magazine Diver’s ‘Best dive centre of the year’ award. We are honored to receive these accolades, which will encourage our further efforts in 2010.
