Camel loves the Marine Megafauna

Camel loves the Marine MegafaunaThis April, our Eco Tribe coordinator Cath Bates traveled to Tofo (Mozambique) and witnessed the day-to- day research work of the Foundation for the Protection of Marine Megafauna . Cath assisted Dr Andrea Marshall and her team in taking ID shots, collecting genetic tissue samples and in acoustic tagging of the local population of mantas. Andrea, who dived with us for three weeks last June and set up a sightings database for Red Sea’s Giant Mantas, explained that acoustic tags are used to identify when mantas are within range of a listening station. Cath also received a certificate of adoption (pictured here) for a female Manta alfredi, with whom she had a special moment. She reported: “The shark population in Tofo likes to munch on the mantas from behind. My manta has a couple of war wounds but I think that is half of her appeal. What doesn’t kill us makes us stronger!”
