100% success for PADI Instructor candidates

100% success for PADI Instructor candidatesCongratulations to our resident PADI Course Director Bianca Greiner and her candidates for another 100% pass rate in the Instructor Examinations (IE)! The two-day IE followed our latest PADI Instructor Development Course (IDC) and Emergency First Response Courses (3-17 April). Camel Dive Club’s IDC group was a cosmopolitan mix, with candidates from seven nationalities: Hannah from Scotland, Caleb from Canada, Peter from Switzerland, Emma from Sweden, Tiina from Finland and Nouf from Saudi Arabia, assisted by our PADI Staff Instructor Beth, from Wales. As usual the atmosphere combined intense concentration and total enthusiasm, as candidates went through together one of the most challenging experiences in a professional diver’s life, the IDC and IE. Caleb – a member of the Canadian military - commented: “ I’ve taken or taught hundreds of courses over the last 12 years, with the military and otherwise. Bianca is one of the best instructors I have ever had or worked with in any field. She genuinely cares about creating competent and professional instructors.” Why not follow your dream and make diving your professional future? Our next IDC starts on 22 May, you could be joining it! for more information.

Camel’s resident Course Director achieves Gold

Camel’s resident Course Director achieves GoldWe are glad to announce that our resident PADI Course Director Bianca Greiner just achieved the GOLD Course Director Level for year 2013. Only 52 CDs worldwide earned this prestigious recognition within the so-called PADI Frequent Trainer Program. While IDCs at Camel may be hard work for Bianca and her numerous international candidates covering all age ranges and backgrounds, they always lead to enriching encounters. “The special atmosphere that Bianca manages to create during IDCs is the result of dedication, professionalism and true love for teaching and diving” says Anthony, who did the IDC at Camel a few years ago and then came back for more Specialty Courses. When IDCs are over, it’s time for “celebration mode” at Camel Bar and that’s when the tension goes down and Bianca looks at her students with satisfaction and pride. Good luck to current IDC candidates and future ones and to Bianca for reconfirming the Gold level and hopefully achieving the Platinum one in 2014.

Ian Churchill’s Marineman and his Camel

Ian Churchill’s Marineman and his CamelArtist Ian Churchill is a regular guest at Camel Dive Club. During a break from graphic novel award nomination events (including the Stan Lee Excelsior), Ian and his wife Sacha managed to squeeze in a trip to Sharm in December. He was kind enough to create a cartoon featuring Marineman and a scuba diving camel (pictured here and on our Facebook page). He presented us with ten prints in addition to the original drawings of the characters. We will be auctioning these pictures to the highest bidders and raising money for three charities – Foundation for the Protection of Marine Mega Fauna, the Shark Trust and Project AWARE. We hope to continue a healthy relationship with superhero Marineman. We will call on his services in future to help protect the waters of the Red Sea, along with all the other Oceanauts at Camel Dive Club!

Mark Powell’s talk at Camel Bar

Mark Powell’s talk at Camel BarThis month we had the pleasure of hosting TDI Instructor Trainer Mark Powell at Camel Bar, upon his return from a liveaboard trip in our beautiful Red Sea. Mark (pictured here with our tech instructor Cath Bates) is one of the UK’s technical diving instructors and wreck explorer gurus, best known for his regular column in Sport Diver magazine and for his book Deco for Divers. The topic of the presentation was “Deco Myths” and Mark shared some interesting theories regarding safety stops, bubble models, reverse profiles and deep stops (among others). Sharm’s diving community turned out in good numbers for the event and Mark was inundated with questions afterwards, by instructors wishing to pick his technical brain! Ian S., one of our regular guests, commented: “I really enjoyed Mark’s talk, it’s been so lucky to be in Sharm at this time. I love the way Mark explains decompression. He does it in a way that normal divers understand.“

Camel hosts the first underwater wheelchair artist in the Red Sea

Camel hosts the first underwater wheelchair artist in the Red SeaCamel is extremely proud to present the making of 'Creating the Spectacle!', a ground-breaking underwater video by artist Sue Austin, which counts Camel and UK diving tour operator Scuba Travel among its sponsors. The eclectic artistic director Sue Austin and her enthusiastic team chose the spectacular Red Sea for filming an extraordinary series of performances of Sue and her jet-propelled underwater wheelchair, which was custom built by the Freewheeling team in Dorset, UK. Sue had learnt to dive with Camel in 2005, when she was already ill. She returned to Camel three times to film her artistic performances because “the whole experience was exceptional, from the staff in the restaurants and the hotel right through to the dive guides. On the boats every effort was made to make everything accessible. And that was not only regarding physical environment, but particularly through the warm, caring, supportive “can do” attitude of everyone there.” 'Creating the Spectacle!' aims to generate a widespread public debate about the nature and value of contemporary arts practice shaped by the experience of disability. Find more details about the project and its public screenings here and watch Camel Dive Club’s video here.
